Default Trade name or federal trade mark

I run a national association that operates in all 50 states. This is a very small, but growing association, and we will soon be filing for our 501(C)(3). My question is how do I protect the name? It is registered here in Ohio as a tradename, however I believe someone cold register the same name in another state. Do I need to trademark the name? Or register in all states? This is a small group, and I am not sure what direction to take.

Default Federal registration of trademark

A federal registration of your trademark would give you rights in all 50 states. However, even a federally registered trademark does not trump any trademark rights that someone might have already created in the name in a particular geographic area. For example, if someone in Omaha had the same or very similar name for a local organization before you, the trademark registration does not take precedence over their rights.
