Default Is your server managed or dedicated?

I've been trying to get an idea what exactly is the difference between a managed server and a dedicated server. Seems to me that the definition is very murky, and depending on what data center you're getting a server from, the service you receive will be very different even though they call it the same thing. Nobody would call a Rackshack server 'managed' though, but places like Nocster call their servers 'managed'. What about a place like ThePlanet, or DedicatedNow? Are they managed? If you had a server that was managed, what would you expect from your service provider?

First, you are confusing two incompatible terms.

There is unmanaged vs managed and dedicated vs shared.

Each means something different. A managed server is where you have an admin that maintains the server and associated software. They maintain the PHP installs, and have root access to the server. Conversely, un-managed require you to install all software with software like telnet.

Dedicated servers are useful for people with sites that need alot of bandwidth and processor power. Youtube for example is an overblown example of a site needing a dedicated server. They have computers which only goal in life is to serve us youtube videos.

Shared houses several websites. This is most common for our uses. Family websites, blogs, etc are housed on shared accounts. The downside is, since you are hosted with other people if you site has continuous high amount of hits, you host may drop you for dragging down everyone's site.

I hope this clears up the confusion. If not, I can provide more info!
