Default Is your server managed or dedicated?

I've been trying to get an idea what exactly is the difference between a managed server and a dedicated server. Seems to me that the definition is very murky, and depending on what data center you're getting a server from, the service you receive will be very different even though they call it the same thing. Nobody would call a Rackshack server 'managed' though, but places like Nocster call their servers 'managed'. What about a place like ThePlanet, or DedicatedNow? Are they managed? If you had a server that was managed, what would you expect from your service provider?

Default Good question

Good question. There is a wide grey area. The spectrum lies between a customer buying a dedicated server and taking full control without the help of the company they bought it through all the way to fully managed dedicated hosting where the customer never directly handles the dedicated server, instead paying the company they bought from to do everything for them. There are varying levels in between of course. Most hosting companies offer some support in the grey area. If a customer calls in with problems or a question about their dedicated server, the company is there to help (usually). If a company needs a bunch of dedicated servers, they more than likely have a webmaster or someone technical to manage the servers for them and don't need to pay the hosting company to do so.

Default Very good question

That is a good question!

In most hosting companies, buying a dedicated server means something along the lines of "we will support you against technical problems with the hardware, but assume you know what you're doing and can take care of yourself. If we feel nice, we might answer some basic questions, but that's it."

So, it's important to be nice to them so they don't mind helping you.

The managed server is the dedicated server that they will control / manage for you. This way, if you need Zend Optimizer or something like that installed, you just tell them and they take care of it. They will set everything up and keep it going for you, as well as make sure you are taken care of.

The difference there is you are paying for more service, in essence.

I think the most effective advantage of Cloud Hosting is that you just will use totally different technologies at a similar platform that isn't potential while not cloud hosting.
