My wife, a chef, is considering starting an online business selling homemade gourmet dog treats. Basically she would be baking in our own kitchen and selling the food over the Internet. Does anyone know the legality of this? Are there any things we should be aware of? Licenses, permits, etc.
So far the only information on the topic I can find is this page on the FDA's web site: http://www.fda.gov/cvm/consumerpetfood.html So it looks like we don't require FDA approval provided we only use ingredients that are already FDA approved. Does anyone know if there are separate sets of state laws on this topic that we should be aware of? If so, would we run into issues when selling over the Internet to other states? Does the law require a completely separate kitchen for the business? Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Any info would be greatly appreciated! |

I really do not think so. I purchased some dog treat from one of my clients once. I mainly purchased the treats from them because I knew them. On their site, it does not have any legalese on there. I think it does have the ingredients though
I would recommend the ingredients of eacg, just in case an animal might be interested. |

You might want to check with your local health department.

You would definitely check with your health department, but I don't believe they would regulate the baking of doggie treats, but they vary from county to county. I also did a little check and found this link that may be of interest for you.

Norax, just ran across your post about dog treats from May 2006. Did your wife pursue this? If so and you have a web site I'd like to see it. If not, I'm curious as to why. If you still have questions in this area I may be able to provide so answers or guidance. I have more experience in this area than most.

I have the weirdest dog, she eats rawhides so fast, she pukes them up. She cant .She cant do these 'good for your dog' dental treats, cause they also make her sick. Does the Don Sullivan perfect dog training method work wiki. Land Dog Training .It seems like I'm one of the first folks to reply about the system as a customer, so I'm Don't get me wrong, my dog gets treats, just not as part of training.how the conversation threading works but I guess if there are follow-up questions, I'll try Jobs & Education; Law & Legal Issues; Literature & Language.
